Project calculator
For independent authors: word count in, finished length and a ballpark price out, with no VAT to add. We’ll confirm a firm quote once we’ve seen the book. Publisher or business? Tell us about the book and we’ll quote per project.
How much studio time to book
Recording takes longer than reading. Retakes, resets, breaks and lunch all count, so book the day, not the hours.
in an 8-hour studio day. A well-prepared, practised professional, breaks and lunch included.
in an 8-hour studio day. Same day, a gentler pace. We recommend planning for this if you’re reading your own book.
A relaxed day beats a long one. A ten-hour book is roughly three and a half days for a pro, five for a first-timer.
The calculator above turns your word count into days. Then read our guide to preparing for your session, which also comes as a PDF.
Where the story gets told
We create a relaxed, acoustically neutral environment where narrators can focus on the performance. Our engineers monitor every session closely, so the audio is clean, consistent and ready for the next stage.
Record with us in Bristol or direct remotely over Source Connect or Cleanfeed. Take the complete session away, or let us look after the editing, proofing and mastering. We work with international publishers and self-publishing authors alike.
Three ways to work with us
Record
You read, we engineer. A treated booth, a good mic and someone listening for every click, breath and stumble.
£120 per finished hourEdit
Retakes, breaths and noises tidied, pacing smoothed, chapters assembled. Add this to a recording.
+ £80 per finished hourProof
A full listen against the manuscript to catch misreads and missed lines before your files go out the door.
+ £40 per finished hourRecord, edit and proof together is £240 per finished hour. These are our prices for independent authors, with no VAT to add; publishers and businesses are quoted per project. Need a voice? We’ll talk you through narrator options. The rate depends on the narrator, typically £100 to £200 per finished hour on top.
Self-read or narrated
Reading it yourself? Nobody tells a story like the person who lived it. We keep the room relaxed and the sessions short and kind, and we’ll flag anything that needs a second take, so you can keep going.
Want a professional voice? Tell us about the book and we’ll talk you through narrator options. Rates depend on the narrator, which is why the calculator shows a range.

Sound advice
How do you turn word count into audio length?
We divide the word count by 9,300, the number of words per hour that ACX and most of the industry use for an average narrator. Pace varies from reader to reader, so treat it as a close estimate.
What does “per finished hour” mean?
It’s the length of the final audiobook, not the time spent in the booth. A six-hour book is charged as six finished hours, however long it takes to record.
Can I record at home and just use your editing?
Get in touch with a sample chapter and tell us what you need. We’ll let you know how we can help.
Do I get the session files?
Yes. We can hand over the complete session, or edited and mastered files, depending on what you need.
